Mount Rushmore National Memorial
(
2 sq mi/5.2 sq km), Pennington
and Custer cos., SW S.Dak., in the Black Hills at Keystone,
17 mi/27 km SW of Rapid City, N of Custer
State Park. Carved on the face of the mt. and visible for
60 mi/100 km, are the enormous busts of four
U.S. PresidentsWashington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and
Theodore Roosevelt. The sculpture, nearly completed when the sculptor,
Gutzon Borglum, died (1941), was finished later that year by his son
Lincoln. It took 14 years to complete the figures. Visitors' Center.
