Muskegon co., W Mich., 33 mi/53 km WNW of
Grand Rapids, on L. Michigan; 43°13'N 86°15'W. Elev.
620 ft/189 m. A port of entry, the city is a
car-ferry terminus and a ship/RR transfer point for a farm,
fruit, and industrial region. Mfg. (motor vehicle equip. and parts,
foundry prods., chemicals, paper prods., sporting goods equip., ink
pigments, gasoline pumps, and heavy machinery). A fur-trading post was
est. here c.1810. The first sawmill was built in 1837, and the lumber
industry thrived until 1890, when the city was swept by fire. Muskegon
Community Col. is here. Manistee Natl. Forest to NE; P.F.
Hoffmaster State Park to S at Norton Shores, Muskegon State
