Navajo , county ( 9,960 sq mi/25,796 sq km; 1990 pop. 77,658), E Ariz., on Utah (N) state line; Holbrook; 35°23'N 110°19'W. Nation's 11th-largest co. Agr. (sheep, cattle, hogs; alfalfa, hay, corn); Native Amer. handicraft; tourist trade. Mt. area crossed in S by Little Colorado R. Black Mesa in far N, parts of Painted Desert in N center; part of Petrified Forest Natl. Park on E border, and parts of Navajo and Hopi Indian reservations cover N ½ of co.; parts of Mogollon Rim escarpment crosses co. in S, forms border of Apache-Sitgreaves Natl. Forest (N) and Fort Apache Indian Reservation (S); bounded by Black R. in extreme SE. Navajo Natl. Monument is in N, near Utah state line. Homolovi Ruins State Park in W center; Monument Valley, with dramatic buttes, scene in many movie westerns, in NE. Formed 1895.
