(nee-O-sho), river,
c.460 mi/740 km long, Kansas (KS) and Okla.; rises
in Morris co., E central Kansas; flows SE through Council Grove L.
Reservoir, past Council Grove and Emporia, through John Redmond
Reservoir, then past Iola, Chante, and Independence (all in Kansas),
and Miami (Okla.) into NE Okla. (where it is generally known as the
Grand R.) then S to join the Arkansas R. near Muskogee. Pensacola Dam
(which impounds the huge L. of the Cherokees) and Fort Gibson dam and
reservoir are in NE Okla.; there are several flood control units on the
river in Kansas.
