Narrow strip extending E across foothills to crest of Sierra Nevada,
here crossed by Donner Pass, bounded by Nev. state on E. Highest point
is Mt. Lola (9,160 ft/2,792 m). Rugged, wooded
mt. country, with many beautiful lakes (e.g., Donner L.). Popular
recreational region (winter sports in Donner Pass area; camping,
hiking, hunting, fishing). Most of E ⅔ in Tahoe Natl.
Forest. Bear R. forms part of S boundary in SW; Middle Yuba and Yuba
rivers form NW boundary. At N end of Mother Lode, it has been a leading
Calif. co. in gold production (peak years were 1850s-1950s; also
mining of silver, quarrying of sand and gravel. Agr. (apples, nursery
stock; cattle; timber). Drained by South Yuba R. Middle and South forks
converge at Englebright Reservoir in NW corner to form Yuba R. Part of
Beale Air Force Base in SW; Malakoff Diggins State Historic
Park in NE; Empire Mine State Historic Park in W center. Grass Valley
is largest city. Formed 1851.
