New Carrollton
, city (1990 pop. 12,002), Prince Georges co.,
central Md., 9 mi/14.5 km NE of Washington,
D.C.; 38°58'N 76°53'W. A rapidly growing suburb of Washington, it
was named Carrollton by the developer, Albert Turner after Charles
Carroll of Carrollton. When a post office was opened in 1965,
mail was misdirected to Carrollton, a small rural village in Carroll
co., which had first claim on the name. The growing suburb became New
Carrollton. A major light RR terminal for the D.C. subway system is
located here. Inc. in 1953.
