, town (1990 pop. 1,913), Cecil co., NE Md., at head
of navigation on Northeast R. (c.6 mi/9.7 km
long), and 24 mi/39 km WSW of Wilmington,
Del.; 39°36'N 75°56'W. Trade center for hay and grain area; sand,
gravel pits; mfg. (fireworks, firebrick). Once nicknamed Herringtown
because of the importance of commercial fishing. The Georgian bell
tower of St. Anne's Protestant Episcopal Church (c.1742) was added in
1904 by Robert Brookings, founder of the Brookings Inst. in memory of
his parents. The churchyard is older than the church and contains
several Indian graves as well as those of colonists dating from the
1600s. Sandy Cove (summer resort) and Elk Neck (site of state forest,
state park) are nearby.
