(O-AW-hee), reservoir, S.Dak. and N.Dak., on
Missouri R., 6 mi/9.7 km N of Pierre (S.Dak.);
c.250 mi/402 km long; 44°28'N 100°24'W.
Has 3 arms (all in S.Dak.), formed by Cheyenne, Moreau, and Grand
rivers. Formed by Oahe Dam (242 ft/74 m high),
built (1948-1963) by the Army Corps of Engineers for power generation,
flood control, irrigation, and recreation. Cheyenne R. (S.Dak.) and
Standing Rock (N.Dak.) Indian reservations on W shore, as is Fort Rice
Historic Site (N.Dak.); West Whitlock and Swan Creek state recreation
areas (S.Dak.) on E shore.
