Oakland , city (1990 pop. 372,242), Alameda co., W Calif., 6 mi/9.7 km E of San Francisco, on the E side of San Francisco Bay; 37°46'N 122°13'W. Together with San Francisco and San Jose, the city comprises the 4th-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. A containerized shipping port and a major RR terminus, Oakland has shipyards, chemical plants, glassworks, food-processing establishments, and an iron foundry. Mfg. includes foods, cleaners, electronic goods, canvas prods., and fabricated metal prods. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was opened in 1936 and connects Oakland with other nearby cities. Oakland is the hq. and hub of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), a 3-co. rapid transit system connected to San Francisco that began operation in 1972. Oakland Internatl. Airport, at Bay Farm Isl. (peninsula) in S. An extremely severe earthquake on Oct. 17, 1989, which struck during a World Series baseball game in the San Francisco Bay area, resulted in great damage to Oakland as well as to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. About 1 mi/1.6 km of Interstate 880 highway, in Oakland collapsed. The earthquake's toll took 62 lives and injured thousands; major repair and reconstruction efforts immediately ensued. Other principal redevelopment since the 1970s has focused on Oakland's waterfront area. Of interest are the Oakland Mus., Chabot Observatory, the Morcom Rose Garden, and Jack London Square. The city has a symphony orchestra, notable parks, a state arboretum, a children's amusement park, and a zoo. Seat of Mills Col., Holy Names Col., Calif. Col. of Arts and Crafts, Laney Col., and Merritt Col.; Univ. of Calif. at Berkeley is to N. The large U.S. Naval Supply Depot and a Oakland Army Base are in W part of city, on bay; Alameda Naval Air Station to SW, in Alameda; Oak Knoll Naval Medical Center in SE. The Oakland-Alameda Co. Coliseum and Arena is the home of the city's major league professional baseball team (the Oakland Athletics). Anthony Chabot and Redwood regional parks to E; Upper San Leandro Reservoir to E, L. Chabot reservoir to SE, L. Merritt reservoir in city, E of downtown; Knowland State Park and Arboretum are in SE. Inc. 1852.
