Ogallala Aquifer
, region, Nebr.; the main source of irrigation
water in Nebr. and the remainder of the High Plains, of which it is the
chief component. The Ogallala, of Tertiary age, contains thick
permeable materials, consisting largely of sand and gravel, and
underlies the Nebr. Sand Hills, extending beyond, esp. at the S and E,
where it merges with Quaternary sand and gravel. In places it is
overlain by recent alluvium, as along the Platte R.
