Omaha Reservation
(1990 pop. c. 1,500), mainly in SE Thurston
co., Nebr. A patchwork of tribal and allotted land comprises the
reservation. In 1855, the Omaha ceded extensive hunting grounds in
exchange for a reservation. In 1865, the N ½ was sold
to the Winnebago tribe through the U.S. govt. Following authorization
by President Chester Arthur in 1882, c.76,000 acres/30,757
ha were allotted and 55,450 acres/22,441 ha were reserved
for future generations. The remainder was given to whites.
Subsequently, Omaha land has been much reduced, with little allotted
land remaining (most of which is leased to non-Indians). Commonly the
leases permit the Omaha family to live in a house on the land, and
there is some acquired tribal land. The majority of the Omaha pop. live
in villages, esp. Macy, where the Omaha agency is located. Many more
live off the reservation, mainly in cities, some distant. The
Omaha hold an annual powwow in Macy in late Aug.
