Ossabaw Island
(AH-suh-baw), one of the Sea Isls.
(c.9 mi/14.5 km long,
7 mi/11.3 km wide), just off SE Ga.
coast, in Chatham co., 15 mi/24 km S of
Savannah; 31°48'N 81°05'W. Marshy. Ossabaw Sound
(c.5 mi/8 km long and wide), at N end of isl.,
receives Ogeechee R. Extensive agr. in 19th cent., much of which has
reverted to a natural state. Used by Creek Indians as hunting ground.
Now administered by the Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources.
