Ouachita River
(WAHSH-uh-tah),
c.600 mi/966 km long; rising in the Ouachita
Mts., Polk co., W Ark., N of Mena; flows E, SE, and S through the
Ouachita Mts. and the cotton-producing region of S Ark. and NE La. and
into the Red R. system. It is joined by the Tensas R. at Jonesville,
La., to form the Black R. Hot Springs, Ark., and Monroe, La., are the
largest cities on the river; also important are Arkadelphia and Camden,
Ark. The river is navigable for shallow-draft vessels below
Arkadelphia. Three dams in the river near Hot SpringsRemmel
(completed 1925), Carpenter (1931), and Blakeley Mt.
(1955)impound respectively L. Catherine, L. Hamilton, and L.
Ouachita (63 sq mi/101 sq km,
Ark.'s largest). Flows through Felsenthal Natl. Wildlife Refuge in S
Ark. and Upper Ouachita Natl. Wildlife Refuge in N La. There is a
hydroelectric power plant at Blakeley Mt. Dam. Felsenthal Dam in S Ark.
impounds L. Jack Lee. The lakes, part of a Federal flood-control
project, are the center of a popular recreation area.
