Capital Region (
750 sq mi/1,942.5 sq km).
Includes cities of Hull and Gatineau; Gatineau N.C.C. Park. Gatineau R.
crosses region from N, enters Ottawa R. at Hull. Purpose of the Natl.
Capital Commission region was to coordinate govt. activites; maintain
quality of development, including limits to construction in vicinity of
Parliament bldgs.; and establish greenways and parks. Federal govt.
office bldgs. and the Canadian Mus. of Civilization were
built in Hull in early 1980s. Inclusion of Que. portion of plan was
seen as an attempt to appease separatist sentiments in the Fr.-speaking
prov.
