Pee Dee River
or Great Pee Dee,
c.200 mi/322 km long; rising in the Blue
Ridge, W N.C., and flowing NE then SE to Winyah Bay, S.C. It is called
the Yadkin until it is joined by the Uharie R. W of Troy, N.C. Formed
by joining of Yadkin and Rocky rivers
14 mi/23 km N of Wadesboro, SSE through
Blewett Falls L. reservoir, to W of Rockingham, N.C.; then flows past
Cheraw and Pee Dee, S.C., joins Waccamaw R. in several channels, from
14 mi/23 km SW of Myrtle Beach to Georgetown,
paralleling Waccamaw bet. these points. Receives Little Pee Dee R. from
N 18 mi/29 km W of Myrtle Beach; enters Winyah
Bay with Black R. at Georgetown. Several hydroelectric power plants are
on the river in N.C. Sometimes spelled Pedee R.
