148 sq mi/383 sq km), mainly in
Bonner co. (Idaho), extends S into Kootenai co, N Idaho, in Panhandle
of Idaho; 65 mi/105 km long, and
1,200 ft/366 m deep. Largest lake in Idaho and
one of the largest and deepest lakes in the U.S. Fed by the Clark Fork,
which flows from SE out of Mont. and enters E side of lake and drained
by the Pend Oreille R., flows W from NW end, near Sandpoint, the only
sizable community on lake, the lake, with the surrounding Coeur
d'Alene (SE) and Kaniksu (NE) natl. forests, is a place of beauty and
a landmark in a farming, lumbering, and mining region. Farragut State
Park at S end.
