length, from Norristown to Ohio; Interstate Highway 276 Delaware R.
from Delaware R. to Norristown; Interstate Highway 70 coincides with
part of 76 in W; extends E-W across the state from Delaware R.,
19 mi/31 km NE of downtown Philadelphia, to
Ohio line 12 mi/19 km WNW of New Castle;
40°54'N 75°29'W-41°28'N 75°41'W. Highway bypasses any cities
near its route, passes N of Philadelphia, S of Reading and Harrisburg,
and NE of Pittsburgh. First portion (with several long mt. tunnels)
bet. Carlisle (E) and Irwin was completed 1940. E extension opened late
1950, W extension about a year later; total length
363 mi/584 km. Continues W as Ohio Turnpike;
6 mi/9.7 km E connection with N.J. Turnpike at
the N.J. Turnpike interchange no. 6.
