, city (1990 pop. 113,504), Peoria co., central Ill.,
on L. Peoria and the Illinois R.; 40°44'N 89°36'W. A busy port of
entry, it is one of the state's oldest settlements and a regional
trade and transportation point; grain, livestock, and coal from the
area are marketed, processed, and shipped in Peoria. It has factories
that produce numerous heavy and light industrial goods (fabricated
metal prods., machinery, iron and steel, transportation equip.,
commercial printing, construction materials, medical equip. chemicals).
Although it is an industrial city, Peoria is known for its scenic
beauty and its many recreational activities associated with Lakeview
Park, which also contains a planetarium, community theater, and arts
and sciences center. La Salle established Fort Creve Coeur in the
region in 1680, and the spot later became a Fr. trading post. The area
was known as Fort Clark after 1813; the first permanent Amer.
settlement was est. 1819. First bridge across Illinois R. opened here
in 1849. Bradley Univ., St. Francis Col. of Nursing, and a U.S. Dept.
of Agr. Northern Regional research laboratory are in the city. Jubilee
Col. State Park and Historic Site 13 mi/21 km
NW. Inc. as a city 1845.
