5 mi/8 km wide; 46°33'N 86°19'W. Sandstone
cliffs, sand dunes, beaches, marshes, waterfalls, and inland
lakes along L. Superior; the 1st natl. lakeshore. Extends along lake
from Grand Marais in E to South Bay, near Munising in W. Cruises from
Munising. Rock formations include Minnie's Castle, Battleship Rock,
Indian Colored Rocks. Lakes include Beaver, Grand Sable, Chapel, Noble,
and Trappers. Area has rich history in logging, trapping, and maritime
activities. Camping, fishing, and cross-country skiing. Munising Falls
and Miners Falls. Authorized 1966.
