Pierre
(PIR) city (1990 pop. 12,906), state (since
1889) and seat of Hughes co., central S.Dak., on E bank of Missouri R.,
opposite town of Fort Pierre; 44°22'N 100°19'W. Its economy is
centered around agr. (chiefly grains and cattle), tourism, and the
state govt. Mfg. (electrical equip., irrigation equip.; printing).
Originally the fortified capital of the Aricara, Pierre served as the
trade center of the middle Missouri R. from 1822 to 1855. From 1876 to
1885 it was the steamboat head for the Black Hills gold trade. The city
boomed with the arrival of the RR (1880), becoming an important trading
and shipping center for a farm and ranch area. In Central time zone;
Mountain-Central time zone boundary follows Mo. R. S to
Pierre/Ft. Pierre, then veers SW across land. A U.S. Native
Amer. school is here. Oahe Dam, a major unit of the Missouri R. basin
project, 6 mi/9.7 km NNW. Pierre Regional
Airport; S.Dak. Cultural Heritage Center; S.Dak. Discovery Center and
Aquarium. Farm Isl. State Rec. Area and Fort Pierre Natl. Grassland to
S. Fort Pierre (1832) to W. Inc. 1883.
