Pinal (PEE-nal), county ( 5,374 sq mi/13,919 sq km; 1990 pop. 116,379), S central Ariz.; Florence; 32°54'N 111°20'W. Plateau and mesa region. San Carlos Reservoir (in NE) holds water from Gila and San Carlos rivers for irrigation. Cotton, alfalfa, hay, wheat, barley, citrus fruits, vegetables, sheep, hogs, cattle, poultry. Copper mining at Ray, S of Superior. Co. includes Ak-Chin Indian Reservation and part of Gila R. Indian Reservation; part of Tohono O'odham (Papago) Indian Reservation in SW, part of San Carlos Indian Reservation in NE. Casa Grande Natl. Monument is N of Coolidge, at center; McFarland State Historic Park in center, at Florence. Lost Dutchman State Park in N; part of Tonto Natl. Forest in N, includes Boyce Thompson State Arboretum; small part of Coronado Natl. Forest, including Santa Catalina Mts., in S; part of Table Top Wilderness Area on W boundary, part of Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness Area on E boundary. Formed 1875.
