Waterway (S). Used by barges and other low-draft vessels. It starts in
N at Port Allen, opposite Baton Rouge, heads W
c.5 mi/8 km, connecting with the Plaquemine
locks, then curves S and continues through E margin of Atchafalaya
Basin, through West Baton Rouge, Iberville, Iberia, and St. Martin
parishes, ending at Grand Lake, N of Morgan City, an inland port with
access to offshore oil and natural gas facilities in Gulf of
Mexico. Oil, gas, and chemical production plants located at both ends
of canal. Also called Port Allen-Morgan City Alternate Shipping
Route.
