, group of the White Mts., N N.H., so called
from the names of its peaks. Mt. Washington
(6,288 ft/1,917 m) is the highest peak in N.H.
and highest point in NE U.S.; a meteorological station is at the
summit. A year-round resort center, it was developed for tourists in
the mid-1800s. Other peaks include Mt. Adams
(5,798 ft/1,767 m), Mt. Jefferson
(5,717 ft/1,743 m), Mt. Clay
(5,535 ft/1,687 m), Mt. Monroe
(5,385 ft/1,641 m), Mt. Madison
(5,363 ft/1,635 m), Mt. Franklin
(5,004 ft/1,525 m), Mt. Eisenhower
(4,760 ft/1,451 m), Mt. Pierce
(4,310 ft/1,314 m), Mt. Jackson
(4,050 ft/1,234 m), and Mt. Webster
(3,910 ft/1,192 m). In White Mt. Natl. Forest.
Appalachian Trail follows crest of range, linking the summits. Famous
for spring skiing in Tuckerman's Ravine (no lifts).
