Range to NW, Wet Mts. to SW. It is the center of shipping, retail, and
industry for the irrigated Arkansas valley farm area, as are coalfields
and abundant timber, cattle, wheat, beans, corn, sorghum. A trading
post, called Pueblo, was est. here in 1842, followed by a temporary
Mormon settlement (1846-1847). The city was laid out in 1860. After a
severe flood in 1921, levees were constructed to control the Arkansas
R.; a dam impounding Pueblo Reservoir and Pueblo State Park to W was
also built. Construction on an ambitious Arkansas R. reclamation
project, designed to serve irrigation, rediversion, and power purposes,
began in 1964. Seat of the Univ. of Southern Colo. and the the hq. for
San Isabel Natl. Forest. Fort Carson Military Reserve to NW; Pueblo
Army Depot (chemical weapons) to E. U.S. Dept. of Transportation High
Speed Test Center to NE. Colo. State Fair (Aug.). Pueblo Zoo, El Pueblo
