12 mi/19 km wide); separated by
14-mi/23-km peninsula from E, connected by the Narrows
passage. Drains W from lower lake through Red L. R. Once part of
prehistoric glacial L. Agassiz. Formed by Lower Red L. Dam
(10 ft/3 m), built (1951) by the Army Corps of
Engineers for flood control. All of Lower lake and W part of Upper lake
in Red L. Indian Reservation; Upper lake bounded by Lake Wildlife Area
and Beltrami Isl. State Forest, on N; Red L. State Forest on E. Village
of Red Lake on S shore.
