(ri-JEI-nuh), city (1991 pop. 179,178), Sask.,
Canada, S Sask., on Wascana Creek; 50°27'N 104°37'W. Distribution
and service center for 1 of the world's largest wheat-growing plains.
Industries include agr. processing, meat-packing, printing, oil
refining, and the mfg. of communications equip. and bldg. materials.
Regina was founded in 1882 when a RR line was constructed through the
region. It was capital of the N.W.T. from 1883 to 1905, when it became
capital of the newly created Sask. From 1892 to 1920, Regina was the
hq. of the NW Mounted Police, and it is now W hq. of the Royal Can.
Mounted Police, which maintains its crime detection laboratory here.
