Has Ill. portion of Quad Cities. Includes Black Hawk State Historic
Site and Campbell's Isl. state parks and part of a natl. wildlife
refuge. Mfg. (machinery, ordnance, apparel, wood prods.); agr. (cattle,
hogs, poultry; corn, soybeans; dairy prods.). Nuclear power plants:
Quad Cities 1 (initial criticality October 18, 1971) and Quad Cities 2
(initial criticality April 26, 1972) are
20 mi/32 km NE of Moline. Use cooling water
from the Mississippi R., and each has a max. dependable capacity of 769
MWe. Rock Island (city) was spared flood damage in 1993 by flood wall,
while Davenport, across river, was seriously affected. Formed
1831.
