co., W Vt., at the junction of Otter and East creeks; 43°36'N
72°58'W. It is a trade and tourist center (summer and winter) with
many small industries. Marble quarrying, which began c.1845, is still
in area. The hq. of the Green Mountain Natl. Forest, Rutland is
surrounded by mts., lakes, streams, and nearby skiing and recreational
areas (Killington and Pico Peak). The Col. of St. Joseph the Provider
is here. Settled c.1770; inc. as a city 1892.
