At heart of Central Valley; bounded W by Sacramento R., S by San
Joaquin and Consumnes rivers and Dry Creek; drained by Consumnes and
American rivers (latter forms Folsom L. reservoir in NE corner). Co. is
urbanized around Sacramento, in N part, especially E part of city.
Dairying; cattle, turkeys; nursery stock, corn, rye, wheat. barley,
oats, rice, tomatoes, pears, grapes, sugar beets, beans. Center of
processing, packing, river and RR shipping, and mfg. for wide region;
many towns have packing houses, canneries. A leading Calif. co. in
natural gas production, gold dredging (American R.); also produces sand
and gravel, stone, silver. Rancho Seco nuclear power plant, initial
criticality September 16, 1974, is 25 mi/40 km
SE of Sacramento, uses cooling water from the Folsom Canal, and has a
max. dependable capacity of 873 MWe. It was closed for 31 days in June
1989 as a result of a public vote that called into question the further
operation of the plant. Part of Folsom L. State Recreation Area in NE;
Co. tapers to a narrow peninsula in San Joaquin-Sacramento delta in
SW. Formed 1850.
