, city (1990 pop. 69,512), Saginaw co., S Mich.,
on the Saginaw R., 15 mi/24 km from its mouth
on Saginaw Bay (an inlet of L. Huron); 43°25'N 83°57'W. RR
junction. Situated in an extensive agr. area, Saginaw is also a port of
entry with diversified industries. Mfg. (machinery, animal feeds,
fabricated metal prods., automobile parts, food processing, concrete,
electrical equip.). Nearby are major salt, coal, and oil deposits.
Native Amer. trails once crossed the city's site, and local Native
Amer. villages were abundant. Lewis Cass negotiated a treaty here
(1819) with the indigenous groups, who ceded much of what is now Mich.
to the U.S. Fur trade was followed by a great pine-lumbering industry,
which thrived until about 1890. The old Schuch Hotel (1868) has an
