Champlain, surrounds city, which is resort, RR, trade, shipping and
mfg. center, and a port of entry. Produces textiles, metal, wood, and
paper prods.; grain and feed, maple and dairy prods. Smugglers' base
in early 19th cent.; scene of Confederate bank raid from Canada in
1864; gathering point (1866) for Fenians planning invasion of Canada.
Became RR center, 1850. Seat of Bellows Free Acad. Town chartered 1763,
organized 1788; St. Albans city inc. as village 1859, as city 1897.
