and N Jamaica; St. Ann's Bay; 18°28'N-18°12'N
77°28'W-77°W. Bounded on W by Trelawny, S by Clarendon and St.
Catherine, E by St. Mary along White R. It is the 2d-largest parish of
the isl. Its narrow, indented coastal strip and picturesque uplands
(Dry Harbour Mts., Mt. Diablo) are noted for their limestone caves.
Rich in agr. prods. (limes, corn, oranges, pimento, coffee,
ginger, sweet potatoes, yams, annatto, coconuts; cattle, horses, hogs).
Trading centers are St. Ann's Bay, Brown's Town, and Ocho Rios, with
tourist attractions at Dunns R. This region is noted for historical
associations. At Dry Harbour, Columbus made his 1st landing (May 4,
1494), taking possession of the isl. for Spain. Seville or Sevilla
Nueva, founded 1509 upon orders of his son Diego, was 1st capital of
Jamaica.
