66,631), extreme SE La.; Chalmette; 29°57'N 89°58'W. Just
SE of New Orleans; mainland portion bounded N by L. Borgne, E by
Chandeleur Sound, S by Breton Sound, W by the Mississippi R. Includes
Chandeleur Isl., 25 mi/40 km to E in Gulf of
Mexico. Industrial communities near New Orleans have sugar refineries,
oil refineries, stockyards, industrial machinery, diversified mfg. Oil
and natural gas extraction. Agr. (home gardens, nursery crops,
vegetables, tomatoes, exotic fowl), oysters; hunting, fishing.
Mississippi R. Gulf Outlet, canal, branch of Intracoastal Waterway,
runs SE from New Orleans nearly the length of the parish. Once named
Terre aux Boeufs for its wild oxen. Among earliest settlers were the
Islenos from the Canary Isls. St. Bernard State Park in W; Jean Lafitte
Natl. Historic Park, Chalmette Unit, in W at Chalmette; Biloxi State
Wildlife Area in E; part of Breton Natl. Wildlife Refuge in Chandeleur
Isls. in far E of parish. Formed 1807. All localities within parish are
incorporated, including Chalmette.
