Among earliest settlers were Germans from Ark., which gave the name
Ger. Coast to the area. Waterford nuclear power plant (opened March 4,
1985; max. capacity of 1,075 MW) is
20 mi/32 km W of New Orleans, uses cooling
water from the Mississippi R. Bonnet Carre Spillway in NW carries
floodwaters from Mississippi R. NE to L. Pontchartrain. Salvador State
Wildlife Area to S. Formed 1807.
