Saint Inigoes
(IN-ih-goz), hamlet, St. Marys co., S Md., near
the Potomac, 17 mi/27 km SE of Leonardtown.
Nearby is Cross Manor, once considered to be the oldest house in Md.,
now known to have been built in the late 18th cent. Also nearby is the
site of St. Indigoes Manor, where Jesuits under Rev. Thomas Copley
(1594-1653) bought land directly from the Indians and asserted freedom
from secular law. St. Ignatius Church (c.1785) was built on the
foundations of an earlier church built in the 1630s.
