by the St. Lawrence R.; drained by St. Regis, Indian, Grass,
Oswegatchie, and Raquette rivers, which are all tributaries of the St.
Lawrence. Plains area along the St. Lawrence; rises to the Adirondacks
in SE. A leading U.S. dairying co.; also farming, timber harvesting,
saw-timber mills, maple-sugar production. Lead, zinc, limestone, talc
deposits. Diversified mfg. concentrated at Massena. Sizable
hydroelectric power generation facilities have attracted the major
aluminum companies to the co.; aluminum smelting and refining. Seasonal
residences and recreational facilities can be found on the St. Lawrence
R. and on Black and Cranberry lakes. Formed 1802.
