80 mi/129 km NNE of Duluth; 47°30'N
91°49'W. Flows generally SW, through Seven Beaver L., passes S of
Mesabi Iron Range, turns SE at Floodwood; flows past Cloquet and
Carlton and Jay Cooke State Park; becomes Minn.-Wis. state border,
flows through Spirit L. as it turns NE and enters St. Louis Bay and L.
Superior, which forms Duluth Harbor. Largely navigable. Its estuary
(called St. Louis Bay) is c.1 mi/1.6 km wide
and forms part of the harbor for the twin ports of Duluth and Superior.
Drains part of Superior Natl. Forest in upper course, passes through
picturesque gorge in Jay Cooke State Park, just W of Duluth. Dammed for
power at Carlton, forms small Thomson Reservoir. Important tributaries
are Cloquet R., above Cloquet, and Whiteface R., above Floodwood, both
from NE.
