238,629), Pinellas co., W central Fla., on Tampa Bay and the Gulf of
Mexico, at the S end of the Pinellas peninsula; 27°45'N 82°38'W. A
port of entry with a large harbor, it is a popular winter resort and
year-round residential community. It is also one of Fla.'s largest
retirement centers. Mfg. includes boats, motor vehicles, appliances,
and electronic equip.; citrus-fruit and commercial-fishing industries.
Eckerd Col., the Stetson Univ. Col. of Law, a junior col., a campus of
the Univ. of Southern Fla., and a military acad. are here, as well as
an airport and a U.S. Coast Guard base. Bridges cross the bay to Tampa
and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge links the peninsula to Bradenton.
