, one of the Sea Isls. (1990 pop. 12,026),
Glynn co., SE Ga., just off the coast, at mouth of Altamaha
R.; c.13 mi/21 km long,
3 mi/4.8 km-7 mi/11.3 km
wide; 31°13'N 81°21'W. Most developed and 2d-largest of the Ga.
Barrier Isls. At S end is resort village of St. Simons Isl., connected
by causeway and bridges to Brunswick,
7 mi/11.3 km W on the mainland. Mfg. includes
textiles, printing, publishing, and seafood processing. On W coast of
isl. is Fort Frederica Natl. Monument (74.5 acres/30.2 ha),
est. 1945, including ruins of Eng. fort built (1736-1754) by
Oglethorpe. The Battle of Bloody Marsh (1742), fought on SE side of St.
Simons Isl. and won by the British, was the decisive engagement in
struggle with Spain for control of what is now SE U.S.
