dependency of Guadeloupe, Fr. West Indies, in Leeward Isls.,
12 mi/19 km SE of St. Martin and
125 mi/201 km NW of Guadeloupe;
Gustavia; 17°54'N 62°52'W. Mountainous and of irregular shape,
11 mi/18 km long (W-E), up to
2.5 mi/4 km wide; rises to
990 ft/302 m. While of little economic
importance, it produces some cotton, tropical fruit, livestock,
fishing, salt panning, mfg. of fiber hats. Has small lead and zinc
deposits, relies on tourism and free-port status. Exclusive, high-end
tourist destination; yachting, cruise ships, and small luxury hotels.
Settled by the French, the isl. was ceded to Sweden (1784) but was
returned to France by 1877 treaty.
