San Bernardino , county ( 20,062 sq mi/51,961 sq km; 1990 pop. 1,418,380), S Calif.; San Bernardino; 34°50'N 116°11'W. Co. is over 200 mi/322 km E-W and over 120 mi/193 km N-S; largest co. in U.S. The SW corner (San Bernardino Valley), which lies S and W of San Gabriel Mts. and San Bernardino Mts. (both over 11,000 ft/3,353 m), is agr. area, which has been largely displaced by urban development, is continuation of Los Angeles urban area (to W), and has most of co.'s pop. Mojave Desert dominates remainder of co., to N and NE; bounded on E by Nev. and Ariz. state lines (the latter formed by Colorado R.), is part of Colorado Desert. SW border comes within 25 mi/40 km of Pacific Ocean. Mfg. (plastics prods., printing machinery, sand and gravel, printing and publishing, millwork, prefabricated structural metal, baked goods, industrial glass, apparel, filter aids, diverse light mfg.). In desert are ranches and some irrigated agr. (esp. S) (at irrigated dists. Victorville, Barstow, Needles): dairying, cattle, eggs, chickens, alfalfa, strawberries, oranges, grapefruits, oriental vegetables, nursery prods., barley. Mines and quarries (potash, borax, iron, sand and gravel, gold, talc, bentonite, clay, lead, zinc, limestone, salt). Shipping of farm prods. San Manuel Indian Reservation in SW (near San Bernadino); Twentynine Palms Indian Reservation in S; part of Fort Mojave, Chimehueri, and Colorado River Indian reservations in SE. Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base in S; Fort Irwin Military Reservation in N; 2 parts of Chino Lake Naval Weapons Center in NW; part of Edwards Air Force Base in W; Norton Air Force Base in SE. About 75% of co. is publicly owned lands: part of San Bernardino Natl. Forest in SW, part of Joshua Tree National Monument in S, part of Death Valley National Monument in N. Mt. summer and winter resorts (notably Arrowhead and Big Bear lakes). Mojave Natl. Scenic Area and Providence Mts. State Recreation Area in NE; part of Chino Hills State Park in SE; Sherwood L. State Recreation area and Heart Bar State Park in SW. Formed 1853.
