San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge , double-decked structure, San Francisco-Alameda cos., W Calif.; built 1933-1936. It has a total length of 8.25 mi/13.28 km. From San Francisco it crosses the bay E to Yerba Buena Isl. (access to Yerba Buena and Treasure isls.), where a tunnel passes through upper elevations of isl. then continues as a bridge to Oakland and Berkeley. The bridge sustained damage in the severe Oct. 1989 earthquake that hit the bay area. Interstate Highway 80 crosses bridge.
