26,183), Orange co., S Calif., residential suburb
46 mi/74 km SE of downtown Los Angeles, and
7 mi/11.3 km ESE of Laguna Beach, on San Juan
Creek, at mouth of Arroyo Trabuco; 33°30'N 117°39'W. San Juan
Capistrano has a small industrial park. Mfg. (aircraft parts, printing,
electromedical apparatus). Boat-building at Dana Point. Irrigated agr.
The economy is based chiefly on tourism. Padre Junipero Serra
founded a mission here in 1776 and named it after St. John of
Capistrano, a Crusader. The mission church, completed in 1806, was
ruined by an earthquake in 1812, but the chapel is still in daily use.
Swallows come to the ruins of the church every March 19, the Feast
Day of St. Joseph, and depart on Oct. 23, the death date of St. John of
Capistrano. An annual fiesta celebrates the arrival of the swallows.
