co., W Calif., residential suburb 15 mi/24 km
SSE of downtown San Francisco on San Francisco Bay at mouth of San
Mateo Creek; 37°34'N 122°19'W. It is a commercial and retail center
with some high-technology mfg. (printing and publishing, electronic
capacitors, wood prods., computer equip.). San Mateo [Span.=St.
Matthew], was named by a Span. expedition in 1776. The area was a Mex.
colony from 1822 to 1846. San Mateo's main growth dates from the start
of RR service in 1863. Refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake
greatly increased San Mateo's pop. The city has a junior col. and a
race track. San Mateo Bridge spans San Francisco Bay to E. Bay Meadows
Racetrack to SE; Crystal Springs Dam to SW, forms lower Crystal Springs
Reservoir; Lower and Upper Crystal Springs reservoirs are on San
Andreas Fault line; San Francisco State Fish and Game Refuge to SW.
