(san PEE-dro), section of Los Angeles, Los Angeles
co., S Calif., in extreme S extension of city, at Point Fermin, E side
of Palos Verdes Peninsula, on Los Angeles Harbor and San Pedro Bay,
adjacent to Wilmington, and 22 mi/35 km S of
downtown Los Angeles. Handles much of harbor's commerce (mainly
exports), and has shipyards, dry docks; mfg. (boatbuilding, diverse
light mfg.). On Point Fermin are U.S. Fort MacArthur Military
Reservation and a park. Cabrillo Beach (park; bathing, amusements) is
near tip of point. Long Beach Naval Shipyard and container port to E.
Royal Palms State Beach is here. Ferries to Santa Catalina Isl. Laid
out 1882 on San Pedro Bay, it early became a port, despite bay's
shallowness and exposed position; inc. as city in 1888; in 1909, it was
annexed (together with Wilmington) by Los Angeles city, and development
of modern harbor was begun.
