San Salvador
, island (1990 pop. 465), in the Bahamas, West
Indies; 24°02'N 74°28'W. Many historians believe that it was the
1st land sighted by Columbus in the New World in 1492. The indigenous
pop. called it Guanahani, and it has also been named Watling or
Watlings Isl. It was formerly confused with what is known as Cat Isl.
(1990 pop. 1,698).
