Sangre de Cristo Mountains
, part of the S Rocky Mts., extending
c.220 mi/354 km from S central Colo. into N
central N.Mex to S of Santa Fe. Noted peaks in Colo. are Blanca Peak
(14,345 ft/4,364 m), the highest and lying in
the Sierra Blanca sect.; Kit Carson Peak
(14,165 ft/4,298 m); Purgatory Peak
(13,719 ft/4,182 m), and Horn Peak
(13,450 ft/4,100 m). N.Mex. peaks include
Truchas Peak (13,102 ft/3,993 m) and Santa Fe
Baldy (12,622 ft/3,847 m). Most of the range
is included in Carson and Santa Fe Natl. Forest, N.Mex., and San Isabel
and Rio Grande Natl. Forest, Colo. The Culebra Range is in Colo.'s
southernmost part of the Sangre de Cristo Mts.
