prov. of Maine, W France; Le Mans. Generally level region with
low hilly ranges in N and NW; drained by the Sarthe and its tributaries
(Huisne and Loir). Chiefly agr. (wheat, potatoes, apples, peas), with
stock-raising (Percheron draft horses and cattle) growing in
importance. Industries include paper milling, wood and metalworking (Le
Mans, Sable-sur-Sarthe), and mfg. of electrical and electronic
prods. Principal towns are Le Mans, La Fleche, and La
Ferte-Bernard. About 40% of pop. is concentrated in Le Mans
urban area. The dept. forms part of the Pays de la Loire administrative
region.
