Saskatoon
(sas-kuh-TOON), city (1991 pop. 186,058), S central
Sask., on the South Saskatchewan R.; 52°08'N 106°40'W. The largest
city in the prov, it is the chief mfg. and distributing center for
central and N Sask. Grain elevators, grain and flour mills, stockyards,
meat-packing plants, oil refineries, potash-processing plants, and
various light mfg. Saskatoon was settled in 1883 and grew rapidly after
the coming of the RR (1890). The Univ. of Sask. with its
affiliated col. is here, and a dominion forestry station is
nearby. The name derives from a Cree word for a berry found in the
area.
