Sault Sainte Marie
(SOO SAINT), city (1990 pop. 14,689),
Chippewa co., N Mich., Upper Peninsula, a port of entry on the
St. Marys R. opposite Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; 46°28'N 84°22'W.
Elev. 615 ft/187 m. RR terminus; ship-RR
transfer point. A variety of light manufactured goods are produced
(publishing, special alloys and plastics, veneer, plastic prods., fly
wheel assemblies), but the city's economy is principally based on
tourism and lake shipping. The famous Soo locks on the St. Marys
R. draw annual visitors to watch heavy-laden ocean vessels and Great
Lakes freighters pass through the intricate system that links lakes
Superior and Huron. Particularly impressive is the
21 ft/6 m lift to the level of L. Superior.
The region was 1st explored (1615) by Etienne Brule, and Father
Jacques Marquette est. a Jesuit mission here in 1668. Fr. occupation
ended in 1763. The British remained in control until 1783, when the
area was ceded to the U.S. in the Treaty of Paris. Fort Brady was built
in 1822. The discovery of great mineral deposits in the NW stimulated
the construction (1853-1855) of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal to
facilitate the flow of ore; the locks have since been enlarged. An
internatl. highway bridge connects Sault Ste. Marie with its Can.
counterpart. Chippewa County Airport
15 mi/24 km to S. L. Superior State Col.
(1946) in the city occupies the historic site of Fort Brady. Bay Mills
(E Unit) Indian Reservation to SE, on Sugar Isl.; ferry to Sugar Isl.;
Brimley State Park to SW. Only U.S.-Can. border crossing bet. Sarnia,
Mich., 250 mi/402 km SSE, and Grand Portage,
Minn., 250 mi/402 km WNW; major embarkment
point for sport hunting and fishing tourism to Canada and Upper
Peninsula.
